Preserving a Piece of Vigo County History

Knob and Tube

Knob & Tube Wiring

One detail that nearly kept us from buying the home was the presence of active knob-and-tube wiring. I’m sure the previous owners were grandfathered in with their insurance company, finding a provider that will open a new policy on a home still using this original form of wiring is pretty much impossible. After several attempts to overcome this problem, we finally found a company through a friend who was willing to give us a homeowners policy with an agreement that all knob-and-tube wiring would be disconnected within 30 days of possession. This is the kind of work that has to be done on a 1848 home that no one actually sees, but it became our very first and time-sensitive project. There was actually a greater portion of the house still using this wiring than we thought, so it left us rather in the dark in portions of the house for a while. We are still working on reconnecting some of the fixtures.
