This was a fun find during one of our usual antique store dates, strolling through one of our favorite stops – Shady Lane Antique Mall. I stopped at a booth that I knew had some local history books and searched hopefully for something that would include information about the Markle House or Mill. Jackpot! I could hardly believe it when I spotted Salty Seamon art on a cover and pulled it out to reveal the title “Otter Creek Township”. Right off the bat, author Judy Calvert writes about both the mill (see this post) and the house!

I sent my find up to the front to hold until we were ready to check out. When we were done shopping I stood in line behind a group of older ladies who took notice of the book on the counter. They asked if they could see it, wishing they had found it themselves, and started flipping through the pages. When they got to the house page, they started talking about how much they have always loved that house. I had just talked about the house with the employee, so she pointed me out behind them. Oh, my! Those sweet ladies were just thrilled to tell me all about how that house has stood as a landmark in North Terre Haute all of their lives. I don’t even know what they said exactly because all three of them were talking at once! It was fun, and the privilege of caring for this local treasure is not lost on us. We are grateful to play a role in preserving this piece of Terre Haute history.
